Hi I’m Rumaysah Mahmoud, a 2nd year graphic communication design student. I chose the production design pathway as I am interested in environmental graphic design. Environmental graphic designers look at both graphics and the details in the environment: such as shape and area. Production design was the perfect pathway for me as I was already learning how to use graphics, but wanted to learn more about how to design for a space. I learnt a huge amount in the first 7 weeks of doing this pathway and wanted to reflect that in the design for the group project.
My first job was to set up the interview space. We did this in a green screen room so we could animate on top of the footage. So I didn’t have to worry about the background just what the interviewees would sit on.
For our interviews I planned for the interviewees to sit on a stool. This is because we planned to use many different angles, including a front view, view of the hands, and a angled side view. The stool meant we where able to get the footage from all angles with out compromising visuals. I also wanted to use a stool as I wanted the interviewee to feel as though they are elevated off the ground, a feeling that associated with dreaming, which is when the imagination is the most free.
I looked on the IKEA website for inspiration but ultimately wanted to use a stool that we could already have access to. From my research I decided I wanted the stool to be white, silver or wood and to be minimalistic. As there would be animations added to the video I did not want the stool to stand out, but also wanted the stool to be clean and fresh and represent the idea of endless possibilities.

It turned out that Adam had the perfect stool and that was the one we ended up using in the interviews.
